A fan asked Maren Morris which of the show’s leading witches she would be auditioning for: Glenda the Good Witch or Elphaba. “I identify highly as an Elphaba but good god her songs are high,” Morris responded.

In October 2003, “Wicked” opened on Broadway with Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel and Joel Gray as the original cast members playing Glinda, Elphaba and The Wizard, respectively.

The musical was adapted from a 1995 novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” written by Gregory Maguire, which tells the story of Elphaba’s life prior to becoming the Wicked Witch of the West from the Judy Garland movie adaptation of the “Wizard of Oz”.

Maren Morris Says Playing Elphaba on Broadway is on Her “Bucket List”

During a 2018 interview, the star told Taste of Country that she’s been dreaming of appearing on Broadway for many years.

“One of my dreams is to be on Broadway someday,” she told the outlet. “My dream has always been to play Elphaba in Wicked. That would be so amazing. I’ve seen it so many times now.”

She said making an appearance on Broadway is a “bucket list dream” that will present “a new challenge” and would be “fun” to try.
On May 1, the star shared that she doesn’t play “coy” with her “weird dreams”, rather she chases them “head on”.

Morris’ music career first launched in 2026 with her breakout hit “My Church”. Since then she’s headlined festivals, released albums and even crossed over into the pop scene when she was featured on Zedd’s 2017 hit song “The Middle”.
