Blake Shelton usually avoids getting emotional in public, preferring instead to joke and appear upbeat. For Blake, there’s no hiding when it comes to just how much he adores his soon-to-be wife Gwen Stefani. And that love shines through in his open excitement about their first time together getting nominated for one of country music’s biggest honors.
Talking with Entertainment Tonight, Shelton couldn’t stop talking about his joy in teaming up with Stefani to work on a country music song. Although Blake was supposed to be hyping the recently opened Orlando location of his Ole Red cafe, the 44-year-old country music singer gushed over his Academy of Country Music Award nomination with Gwen, 51.
Shelton and Stefani’s song, “Nobody But You,” is competing for the Music Event of the Year category. And if you’re thinking this isn’t Blake’s first time out getting an ACM nod, you’d be right.
However, the occasion does mark the first time that Gwen has received an Academy of Country Music Award nomination. Together with Blake, she won a CMT Music Award for their tune.
And having his girlfriend nominated with him makes all the difference, confessed Shelton.
“I texted her actually this morning on the way here. I wish she was here with me,” he said. “I said, ‘I can’t believe that I get to be nominated for awards with my best friend’… How do you get so blessed and so lucky? It’s unbelievable.”

ACM Award Performance: Why Blake Shelton Calls Himself the ‘Luckiest Guy’ in Country Music!
As for winning, Shelton couldn’t resist joking about the chances.
“I don’t know what our chances are to win that thing, but if we don’t win, we’ll know it’s rigged,” he teased.
Whether they win or lose at the Academy of Country Music Award ceremony, Blake will hop on stage to perform at the Sunday event in Nashville. Shelton is scheduled to sing two of his songs, “Austin” and “Minimum Wage.”
Marking Blake’s debut single, “Austin” celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Shelton recalled how he felt at the very beginning of his country music career, which now spans two decades.
“I wanted to be a country singer on the radio and I didn’t really have any plans or goals beyond that,” Shelton reminisced. I had ‘Austin,’ it was a big hit. Then we came out of the gate after that and stumbled, had a few songs that flopped, came back with ‘Old Red’ and it was kind of a hit. Then we had some flops, and I realized, man, making it more than a minute in this business, you have done something [right].”
Blake got humble about the fact that 20 years after his beginning, his song remains on the charts. He calls himself the “luckiest guy in country music.”
“I have so many of my friends that came out the same time I did and they had incredible careers, but they didn’t last this long. I look at them as way more talented and better than anything I do,” admitted Shelton. “So I just know how lucky I’ve been. [I] guess I made some good decisions along the way and surrounded myself with people that I trust and are good at what they do.”
Watch ≈ perform at the 56th ACM Awards when the event broadcasts live from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House, Ryman Auditorium and Bluebird Cafe, Sunday, April 18 at 8/7c on CBS and Paramount+.
