Gwen Stefani loves to share her talents and have talented people share theirs with her, and as the 51-year-old is currently working on new songs, she thought Blake would have made the process easier by collaborating. What are fiancé’s for right? But Blake’s got other things on his mind other than collaborating.
Stefani on working with her voice co-star Shelton
“I wish he would write with me, but he doesn’t really write anymore. We’ve actually written three songs together — we wrote a Christmas song together, and then we wrote two other songs.” Gwen Stefani shared with DJ Khaled in his podcast The First One.
The two have not only written songs together, but have even sang and performed together. Happy Anywhereis a solid song that the couple collaborated on, with Gwen singing background vocals and supporting Blake’s calm country voice. The video for this beautiful song was as beautiful as the song itself with Gwen and Blake showing us how happy they are to be together. Even though Happy Anywhere was not written by the couple.
Gwen later admitted with a laugh that not getting to be creative with Blake makes her so mad, but she further says that he still helps out a lot in her creative process by listening and providing feedback on her songs.
“But he just doesn’t like writing that much,” Stefani says, which is something that’s hard for her since she’s used to working with a team.
“When you’re on your own [but used to] collaborate [ing] and writing with a bunch of different people, you kind of feel like you need someone to do that with,” she continued saying on The First One podcast, adding that Shelton is a great teammate. “Yesterday, Blake and I sat down and listened to, like, every song — which is a lot of songs — and just put our favorite stars by which ones. We definitely bounce off each other.”
“I really rely on him a lot for what his taste is,” she continued. “He knows all genres from being on [The Voice] you know what I’m saying? He has a really good ear for hits, or just songs that are just the ones that we all like. So I definitely lean on him a lot.”
She went on to say that though they’ve collaborated a lot musically in the past- she jokingly says that doing “two” songs together is a lot- they aren’t looking to do an album together. She further says that she’s grateful to have done a duet with him, because he’s never done it before.
Shelton on Collaborating with Stefani
Blake and Gwen first won an award for collaborating together when they took home the award for Best Collaborative Video of the Year for their “Nobody But You” music video at the 2020 CMT music awards.
“We’ve been together now for five years, believe it or not. We’ve worked together and we’ve written together,” he told ET at the time, “So at this point in our relationship, we’re always looking for what’s the next thing that we haven’t accomplished yet.”
“So ‘Nobody But You’ is literally like our two worlds colliding musically,” he continued. “From a work standpoint, we knew we could work together on The Voice, and obviously that’s where we met, and now to be able to make music together and work together and go perform that stuff. That clearly has brought us closer together.”
