Matthew McConaughey Reveals Country Music Video Debut and Star-studded Virtual Benefit
Matthew McConaughey news reveals that the star has been in the headlines lately with his claims of considering a run as Texas governor and a new charity event. But he’s also reminding fans that his first on-camera appearance wasn’t as his infamous Dazed and Confused character, but in a country music video.
The Dallas Buyers Club star’s acting debut was actually in Trisha Yearwood’s “Walkaway Joe” music video. He reminisced about that early career milestone during a recent interview on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”
“Well, ‘Walkaway Joe,’ I think it was early 1992,” he said. “I’m going to college here at the University of Texas — this was before ‘Dazed and Confused’ — and I was trying to get odd jobs in front of the camera when I could and I got cast in that music video to play Joe,” he told Clarkson in a virtual interview from Austin, Texas.

McConaughey was still in his 20s when the video was shot and former Eagles band member Don Henley was also featured. His character, Joe, is a bad boy who seduces a teen and draws her into a life of crime despite her mom’s pleas to steer clear. Eventually he abandons her at a motel.
The actor said, “Things are going well, then where we end up at the last stop, she wakes up and Joe, myself, is nowhere to be seen.”
He never shared scenes with Yearwood, who is married to country superstar Garth Brooks, and he has never met the country singer.
Matthew McConaughey News: Actor Steps Up to Help
McConaughey is proud to be a native Texan and after a series of winter storms left the state in ruins in February, the Oscar-winning actor wanted to do something to help.
“In Texas, we’re used to a hurricane, a tornado, a drought, heat, but not a freeze,” McConaughey, told People. “It’s something we weren’t prepared for.”
In response he has organized a star-studded virtual benefit, We’re Texas, set for on March 21, which will air on the actor’s YouTube channel and in Texas on Spectrum News 1.
The Actor Has a Benefit for Texas
The event is hosted by McConaughey and stars talent like Renée Zellweger (another Texas native), Kelly Clarkson and Kacey Musgraves. Proceeds will provide direct relief to families and vulnerable communities still affected by the damage of the storms.
