Where is George Strait from? George Harvey Strait Sr. is an American Country music vocalist, lyricist, and producer. He is often regarded as the “King of Country music” because of the true Texas cowboy looks and mannerisms he portrays in his songs and performances.
Born on the 18th of May, 1952, in Poteet, Texas, he remains one of the most influential and revered country music stars from the early 80s to date, with his tours drawing large crowds.
George shot into the limelight off the success of his 1981 single, “Unwound”. Between the 80s and 90s, George scored several number ones with 7 of his studio albums. He has been the recipient of many distinguished musical awards, which include being named by the Academy of Country Music as the Artist of The Decade in the 2000s.
He currently holds the record for the most number-one songs on the Billboard Country Music Charts, offsetting Twitty’s record in 2009. In 2013, he became the artist with the most number-one tracks when his hit song, “Give It All We Got Tonight”, went top of the charts.
He is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with over 100 million of his albums sold globally. The RIAA has listed George as the 11th best-selling American singer.
George Strait Growing Up And Rise To Stardom
George Strait grew up in the town of Pearsall, Frio County, the eldest of three children, with his late junior brother, John Jr., and his sister, Pency. After his parents divorced during his fourth grade in high school, he and his late brother were raised by his father, while his sister went away with his mother.
George began his musical career at Pearsall High School, drawing inspiration from The Beatles. His love for country music was stirred by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Merle Haggard, Hank Thompson, George Jones, and Bob Wills. He got admitted to the Southwest Texas University in 1975, after getting an honorable discharge from the US military, where he finished with a degree in Agriculture.
After several unsuccessful attempts to get a recording contract in Nashville, George finally got signed by MCA in February of 1981. He released his first single “Unwound” to critical acclaim, hitting number six on the country music charts. Since then, he has gone on to release over 25 successful studio albums to date.
Relationships And Norma Strait Marriage
George met his wife, Norma when they were both still in high school. On the 4th of December 1971, the young George ran away with his heartthrob to get married in Mexico.
They had their first child, Jennifer, on the 6th of October, 1972. Their son, George Strait Jr., was born 9 years later. He is affectionately called “Bubba”. On the 25th of June, 1986, Jennifer was involved in a fatal car accident in San Marcos dying at the tender age of 13. Her parents set up a foundation in her name to cater to the needs of children in the San Antonio vicinity.
George became a proud grandfather in 1992, when his daughter-in-law, Tamara Strait, gave birth to his grandson, George Harvey Strait III.
