How Old George Strait is Might Surprise You

George Strait was born on May 18, 1952, making him 68 years old. That’s right, this amazing country legend is nearly 70 and yet the talented American country music singer, songwriter, actor, and music producer has the energy of someone half that.

The reason he has been nicknamed the “King of Country” is because he is one of the most influential and popular recording artists of all time.

George Strait has been labeled a country neotraditionalist, a moniker also applied to fellow hitmakers Garth Brooks, Randy Travis and Dwight Yoakum. What does this mean? In the late 80’s Strait and other artists steered country back to its roots and away from the “Rhinestone Cowboy” era of more pop sounding tunes.

Country Music News: The King of Country

His sound proved to be undeniably popular and over the years Strait had a total of 60 number-one hits, more than than any other artist in any other genre of music.

Not content to rest on his laurels, the handsome and easy going country singer gave acting a try. In 1992, he played the main character in the film Pure Country, and also released the film’s soundtrack.

This turned out to be his most successful studio album with hits like “Heartland”, “I Cross My Heart,” and “When Did You Stop Loving Me.” He also appeared as himself in the movie Grand Champion (2002).

Pure Country featured Strait as Dusty Chandler, a famous country singer who had to lose himself to discover that he had become a sellout musically.

George Strait Served His Country

On December 4, 1971 Strait eloped with his high school sweetheart, Norma Voss, and married in Mexico. Soon after he enlisted in the United States Army as an infantryman and was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii as a part of the 25th Infantry Division.

There he performed with an Army-sponsored band, “Rambling Country” and ultimately attained the rank of Corporal.

Strait was honorably discharged from the Army in 1975. After that he enrolled at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) and graduated with a degree in agriculture.
In 1985 he established an endowment fund at the university and in 2006 he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree by his alma mater.

So there you have it, George Strait, the King of Country, is 68 years old and luckily for his fans he shows no signs of slowing down.
