Miranda Lambert Shares Truth About Blake Shelton Duet

Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton once reigned as the queen and king of country music. Holding hands at award shows, posing on the red carpet together, photographed shoulder to shoulder, smiling at each other, and both soaring on the country music charts, it seemed as if nothing could ever go wrong for Miranda and Blake.

Then came the shocking news that Miranda Lambert and Shelton were splitting. And gradually, over time, country music fans are learning more about what happened behind the once-upon-a-time couple’s closed doors. Now Miranda herself is spilling a secret as she recalls writing a country music song with Blake. Learn their story and see the video below.

Miranda Lambert: How She Really Felt Writing A Country Music Song With Ex Husband

In recent interviews, Lambert has been sharing the emotions and tales that resulted in her most successful country music songs. One such song, written with her then-husband Blake Shelton in 2012, focuses on the death of Blake’s beloved brother.

Country music fans know that Shelton is famed for his humor and light-hearted approach to life. But according to Miranda, that facade covers up painful experiences in his past.

One such experience: In 1990, Shelton’s older brother Richie died. The fatal car accident occurred when Blake’s brother was only 24.

Miranda recalled learning about her then-husband’s loss and how she felt when he finally opened up about his emotions.

“My ex-husband, Blake, had lost a brother, and it’s one of those moments where even if you’re married to someone, sometimes you find something new about them,” pointed out Lambert. “Dudes don’t open up about things, but he started telling me about the experience of it all. And I was like, ‘Have you ever written about it?’ … And he’s like, ‘No.’ “

What Blake Shelton Revealed About His Upbringing

And what Shelton then revealed to Miranda Lambert about his upbringing shows how he developed his “real men don’t show their emotions” approach to life.

Miranda shared that Blake insisted, “My dad just says, “You don’t get over it. You just get used to it.”‘

But Lambert admits she pushed Shelton, asking if he and she could write a country music song about his loss.  “Do you want to try or is that invasive?” Miranda recalled asking Blake.

Lambert remembers today that she vowed to Blake that she “would never try to write your story because I didn’t live it, but maybe I could help because I’m an outside perspective, but I feel your pain talking to me right now.”

And the result overflows with emotion. Talking about “Over You,” Miranda calls the song-writing with Blake “a special moment.”

The former couple won song of the year at the CMA Awards and the ACM Awards. They also achieved the top spot on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts.

And although they have since divorced, Lambert expressed gratitude that the former couple “shared that song and that it helped his family heal, to have that together.”
